ABOUT kdp

kdp is a professional project oriented dance company focusing on new dance, multimedia dance and dance for the camera. The company premiered at the 2007 American Dance Festival Acts To Follow Series at Duke University, performed in the 2007-2008 North Carolina Dance Festival and will headline the 2008 NC Dance Alliance Annual Event. kdp will join the 2008-2009 North Carolina Dance Festival Tour and perform CUBED (2).

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

I appreciate the impact that modern and post-modern choreographers have had on my personal dance history; however, I define myself as a contemporary choreographer.  I do so because contemporary dance is embedded with a renewed emphasis on physical invention, expressive clarity, subtle athleticism and unexpected moments of literary narrative.  I foreground the body in my work by investigating what dance theorist Ann Cooper Albright calls somatic identity - the experience of one’s physicality and cultural identity – how one’s body renders meanings in society.  I often describe my work as ‘autobiographical movement tapestries.’  By that, I mean I weave personal story, full-bodied dancing, iconography, music, video and visual design to create a rich, layered and multi-sensory experience for the audience.
